"Tallow awoke with a tightness in his chest muscles that seemed to pull tension throughout his body, skewing his equilibrium as he slowly raised himself from the marginal comfort of bed. He sat on the edge of the mattress for a long moment, using his feet to fish up the boxers he’d left on the floor the night before. He managed, with slow, frustrating movements, to pull on the boxers shorts and then repeated the long, slow pattern with the T-shirt that also lay next to the bed. When he finished he gained some satisfaction for marginally dressing himself for the first time in over a week. The, gathering his balance, he physically and mentally readied himself for the short journey into his wheelchair. Guster had woken earlier and Tallow, determined to leave his days as an invalid behind him, had no desire to call out for her help."
